How to prepare for the mammogram

Say that you have implants when you book, and say it again in the room. Facilities that follow mammography standards can add implant-displacement views so more breast tissue is pulled forward and imaged. A standard set of pictures alone can hide tissue behind the device. Bring the implant card if you still have it. The type, saline or silicone, and the year it was placed belong in the report.

Mammography is for cancer detection. It is not the study used to clear a silicone implant of silent rupture. If your question is the integrity of the bag, ask about ultrasound or MRI on the schedule described in the implant-imaging page, and do not treat a normal mammogram as an answer to that question.

If the mammogram is incomplete or abnormal, the next images and any biopsy are arranged with the breast surgeons rather than as a new referral. Bring prior films. Comparison with last year's study prevents a stable finding from being treated as a new one.
