Timing it with cancer care

Reconstruction is planned at the same time as the cancer operation whenever that is safe. Immediate reconstruction, started on the day of mastectomy, spares a second start and keeps a skin envelope when the flaps are healthy. Delayed reconstruction is the better choice when radiation is likely, when the skin cannot be trusted, or when you need the cancer treatment finished before another decision.

Dr. Funk sets the cancer operation: what is removed, what is left, and what the pathology has to confirm. Dr. Sayah sets the rebuild so it does not compromise that. A beautiful reconstruction on an incomplete cancer operation is a failure. So is a cancer operation that never mentions what the chest will look like afterward, if you wanted that discussed.

Lumpectomy defects are included. A dent after breast conservation can be filled with fat or rearranged local tissue, once the margins and the radiation plan are known. Bring the biopsy result and the imaging. The method is chosen from those, then from your preference among the methods that fit.
